Closed Monday for Holiday (but what are the books doing?)

The library is closed Monday, January 16th for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. This video makes me wonder what the books are getting up to while we are all gone (and I’m also blown away by the amount of time and effort that must have gone into making it- I know how long it can take to arrange just one shelf of books).

3rd Thursday BINGO!

Every third Thursday of the month there is an after school activity for kids at the Library. This month we’ll be playing Bingo. Everybody loves to play Bingo, so come to the Library at 3:00 p.m. on January 19th. There will be prizes for all.

Where did the game of Bingo come from? According to The History of Bingo by Mary Bellis, the game originated in Europe, but the name is American.

“In the U.S., bingo was originally called “beano”. It was a country fair game where a dealer would select numbered discs from a cigar box and players would mark their cards with beans. They yelled “beano” if they won.

The game’s history can be traced back to 1530, to an Italian lottery called “Lo Giuoco del Lotto D’Italia,” which is still played every Saturday in Italy. From Italy the game was introduced to France in the late 1770s, where it was called “Le Lotto“, a game played among wealthy Frenchmen. The Germans also played a version of the game in the 1800s, but they used it as a child’s game to help students learn math, spelling and history.

When the game reached North America in 1929, it became known as “beano”. It was first played at a carnival near Atlanta, Georgia. New York toy salesman Edwin S. Lowe renamed it “bingo” after he overheard someone accidentally yell “bingo” instead of “beano”.“

So whether you call it beano, or bingo, or lotto, it’s fun to play.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. You know what that means, it’s the playoffs! I am talking about the pro football playoffs. This year is especially exciting because my 49ers are actually in the playoffs. It has been a long dry spell. Today [January 10th] marks the anniversary of “The Catch”. That is when Joe Montana hit Dwight Clark in the end zone with 51 seconds left in the NFC Championship game. The contest was between the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys. “The Catch” set up a successful extra point kick by Ray Wersching that lifted the 49ers to a 28-27 victory and a trip to Super Bowl XVI. Since then the 49ers have been to five Super Bowls and been victorious in each of them [YEAY!]. The 49ers have a long and distinguished history, beginning in 1946, but the Cowboys were a hurtle that they could somehow never getting past. That all changed on January 10th 1982.

Since then they have been victors in Super Bowl XVI – 49ERS vs. Bengals [26-21],Super Bowl XIX – 49ERS vs. Dolphins [38-16], Super Bowl XXIII – 49ERS vs. Bengals Super Bowl XXIV[20-16], – 49ERS vs. Broncos Super Bowl [55-10], XXIX – 49ERS vs. Chargers [49-26].

The 49ers remain the only team in NFL history to appear in more than one Super Bowl without ever losing.

A great way to start off a New Year

Well, it’s a New Year and time to figure out what to do :

One of the first things to do is check out the Library. We have new books on our display shelf – New activities for Teen (Check out Nancy’s library Calender handouts at the front desk) New community event on our bulletin board.

And for those of you that are getting ready to prune your roses (Dec.-Feb) – We have a lots of good books in the 635.933 section .

So it time to start your New year on the right foot by stepping into the Library.

Be a Volunteer!

Do you have a few hours to spare each week? Maybe you are retired, maybe you need some work experience, maybe you just like to help your community. Then volunteer.

Try volunteering at your favorite place that needs you. It could be the library, or it could be a school, rest home, humane society, art center or other organization.

The library uses volunteers to shelve books and work on special projects. And of course, the Friends of the Orland Library always welcomes new members to support the library.

We love our volunteers! But the library isn’t the only place to put your talents to use. Ask around— Communities are full of places that need volunteers.

Volunteering gives you a reason to get out of the house and it benefits your community. It will make you feel good about yourself and the friends you make.

And if you are already a volunteer, Thank you! You make America a great place to live.

Happy 2012 to everyone! Now it is back to school [and work]. I was thinking of all the great tools we have at the library. My nephew was assigned a book report over the holiday. It got me to thinking that a blog about how to write a book report might be a good idea. We have a lot of books here int the Library to help you there. Hopefully that will help you out. We, here at the Library, are always ready to help with any recommendations you might want. So, whether you need to write a report or just want a good read, come and check us out!

Calling All Teens

Want to be a decision maker at the Orland Free Library?

You can help to choose and plan activities for young adults ages 13 to 18. The library has a Teen Council that plans activities like our recent Pumpkin Carving Contest, Movie Afternoon, and Christmas Tree Raffle. The Teen Council is looking for more members to plan programs for 2012.

What kind of activities would YOU like to see at the library? Would you like to help pick new books and new furniture for the Young Adult area? Contact library staff members Nancy Leek or Lisa Chaffin and let us know about your interests.

The next Teen Council meeting is Thursday, January 5th at 3:30. All teens are welcome. Join the team and help make the Orland Library the kind of place you want to be.

New Years resolutions 101

So if you find yourself with any or a few of the above mentioned resolutions, You are in good company.

So how about a Library based resolution? My friend did the 52 book challenge. Reading a book a week. I do believe she was successful. I think, though, some took more than a week and some less, but by the end of the year she had done it. That may be too ambitious, but you can use any parameters you wish. How about reading some Pulitzer Prize winners from years past? Whatever your choice may be, we at the Library would be happy to help you achieve your goals. I will leave you with this beautiful poem by William Ward
